La Palma is one of the westernmost islands in the
Canary Islands Archipelago and is locally known as "la
isla bonita" (the beautiful island) for its lush
vegetation and extraordinary natural beauties.
It covers an area of 706 sq. kilometers, reaching
2.426 metres above sea level and sustaining a stable
population of around 80.000. Its deep green forests
and the abundance of water, together with an important
variety of flowers, contrast with the numerous volcanic
cones, lava flows and basalt dikes, which account
for its geological origin.
A rich culture full with tradition, gastronomy,
handicrafts and folk music, partially inherited
to its aboriginal inhabitants, partners with
a variety of archeological, natural and architectural
resources.
The tranquility and armony of the
island rests on top of well-known assets as
the Caldera de Taburiente, the Astronomical Observatory
of El Roque de Los Muchachos, Los Tilos forest (declared
World Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO) and the archaeological
sites of La Zarza and Belmaco. The joys of its excellent
hiking paths network and its black volcanic sand
beaches should not be left unsaid.
